Top 3 Reasons to Be Less Than Perfect

As a business owner, you are probably familiar with the impression of increase.
You know… how you look to the outside world.
What people think of you.
How others perceive your business, your products and/or services.
And regrettably, it’s ridiculously easy to get caught up in the show.
What happens over time is that we become SO FOCUSED on what others think that we never stop to think about how our perfectionism may be costing us money.
Here’s an example…
I had coffee a few weeks ago with a business owner – someone I consider a peer. She said to me, “Hey Brook, everything you put out, i.e. marketing, graphics, videos, content, programs, etc. is freakin’ perfect.”
I said, “Really?”
She said, “It’s actually kind-of intimidating. I feel like I’d have to be PERFECT to work with you.”
*HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL*
(We laughed because she knows I’m faaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrr from perfect. I love a mean vodka tonic. I binge on carbs. And I have challenges in my business just like the next guy.)
But this seemingly insignificant chat got me thinking about perfectionism, the impression of increase and what it might be costing my business. (Maybe yours too.)
Striving for perfection is a slippery slope. While it super important to be professional in your approach, (after all, no one wants to hire an amateur), there are a zillion reasons to be imperfect.
Here are my Top 3:
- People appreciate vulnerability. The fastest way to build a relationship with someone is to be VULNERABLE. When you’re honest about what’s NOT working, where you fall down, and what sucks or puts you sideways, others can relate. No one on the planet is perfect, so go ahead and air your imperfections.
- Relatability and likeability. Your ideal clients, partners, vendors, etc. will see themselves in your story. Not the story of your fabulous life, but the falling to YOUR calling. How you overcame fear, fires and struggles to arrive where you are today. Remember, people buy from people they know, like and trust. Consider this permission to show up as your imperfect, crazy self.
- Get OFF your a. The only way you’ll get ahead in business is to take imperfect action. Your addiction to perfection may stop you from connecting with a new client. Sending a deal-closing email. Making that follow-up call. If you’re waiting for the “perfect time” I guarantee it will NEVER come.
Perfectionism may be costing you more than you know… in missed opportunities, misguided perceptions and your willingness to take action. So go ahead and show em’ who you are and what you’ve got. As Dr. Suess says, “those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter.”
