The Devil’s Rain – A Challange for Rob Zombie

Way back in the early 80′s, when I was a rambunctious little kid, against my parents will, I watched a movie called “The Devil’s Rain”. This is a 1975 horror movie starring Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner & Tom Skerritt. Though it would not stand up to today’s standards of what people would consider a very scary movie, this old horror flick held its own back in the day. I fondly recall watching a few good Satan worship movies as a kid but this one has always stayed with me. It scared the crap out of me. The movie is about a satanic cult that has the awesome ability to melt people. MELT PEOPLE!! A son of one of the earlier victims comes to town to destroy them! How cool is that? Melting of faces AND revenge, in one movie? Whoa.
This was the first movie that I’ve ever seen whereas a human’s face was literally being melted off of his skull (shortly followed by Raiders of the lost Ark). I was mesmerized by it, but not in Jeffrey Dahmer sort of way. Seriously though, what little boy all of 11 or 12 years old wouldn’t think that was super cool to watch! I can’t help but think of how for 1975, the special effects were pretty good. Today though, they probably wouldn’t even be passable in a low budget film. As far as the acting goes, William Shatner + Ernest Borgnine + Tom Skerritt (Contact, Picket Fences and a slew of other TV roles), need I say more?
Now, I’m not at all a big fan of movie remakes. I believe that there are way too many talented writers out there for Hollywood to be remaking movies, especially those that were successful when they first came out. That being said, however, I would absolutely LOVE to see this movie brought up to date. This has Rob Zombies name written all over it. The first Rob Zombie movie that I saw was House of 1000 Corpses which he wrote and directed. It came out in 2003. I was blown away. The characters were believable as is the dialog. The movie reminds me of an old 70′s grindhouse style movie. Only, it doesn’t come across as low budget. After seeing House of 1000 Corpses, I was a fan of Rob Zombies writing & directing. I was already a fan of his music.
As for remakes, Rob Zombie remade the cult classic, John Carpenter movie, Halloween. Dare I say it was better than the first? Yes, yes I do dare. He wrote the screen play for this and directed it as well. Not only does this movie give you an awesome creepy, look over your shoulder feel, it also does what the first Halloween failed to do. Give a little background of Michael Myers. I love that about this movie.
I think if anyone can pull of a remake of “The Devil’s Rain”, it has to be Rob Zombie. This guy will make the movie not only creepy but outright scary. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what he would do with melting faces.
Please Rob Zombie, warm up your keyboard and break out your director’s chair. This movie needs to be brought back!
