It is a very important crop of the country as it feeds the local population and earns foreign exchange as well. The quality of rice that is grown here matches the world standards by every means. The taste and aroma of Basmati rice of Pakistan are very popular all over the world. Support to the growers is also available from different institutions so that the production may increase and finally bring more financial benefit to the country.
The farmers in many areas are provided with proper guidance from selection of seeds to plantation of the crop. A number of mills are also erected in the near about of rice growing areas that make the grain presentable. The finishing of the grain is done by the rice mills. Modern machinery and methods are contributing in the export of this food commodity. The process of mills make sure that all the grains are of same size and properly polished that are ready to present as the best quality rice of the world. The raw product of the fields is turned into a commodity on which farmers feel proud of.
The taste of rice also varies so different species of this grain differ in their taste. Qualities of every species are dissimilar to other and especially the difference in taste is considered as the most important one. The inputs of this crop are getting expensive and consequently the price of rice is also getting higher. Although new methods and better per acre production are the factors that help to keep the price at a reasonable level but shortage of water and scientific knowledge of farmers are hurting the efforts seriously. The competitor countries producing this grain and offer it at a low price also make things difficult for the local growers.
Paddy fields require comparatively more water than other crops. In the initial stage the fields are water bounded and when rice plants grow up then this condition also removed. In the pluvial areas of central Punjab rice crop is abundantly cultivated and completely depend on rainy season. These areas are famous for the best quality rice and exporting most of it to the world. A number of organizations are working with the support of government to increase per acre production and also the quality of rice. Recently a new method of cultivation is introduced that would certainly play a vital role in reducing the cost and human labor.
