Common Types of Pearls Available in World
handmade jewelry

Pearl is the most precious and desired gem after diamond. There is no other gem other than diamond that has fascinated the mankind as much as pearl has. The oldest known pearl that was used in the form of jewelry dates back to 2000 BC. Basically it is a small object made up of calcium carbonate that is produced by a shelled mollusk. The pearl is formed in the soft tissue of the mollusk when any microscopic impurity or object falls inside the shell of the mollusk. Although it can be of any shape, the ideal pearl is round and smooth. As a gem, it is considered as a very rare, precious, mystic and valuable stone. Nacre, a mixture of aragonite and conchiolin, is used by the mollusk for coating the irritating object that fell on the inner surface of the mollusk which results in the formation of the pearl.

There are many different categories and types of pearls that are available in this world. One of them is the Tahitian Pearl which is considered a symbol of luxury and perfection. Tahitian pearls are exceptionally beautiful and valuable. They are considered as the queen of pearls. The pearl are named after the island of Tahiti as the black lipped oysters present in the island produce them. They are normally black, grey or greenish black in color. The demand for these pearl is quite great among the people of the world thus resulting in an increase of 5%-10% in the value each year. The factors which determine the quality of these pearls are size, luster, nacre thickness, color, shape and thickness. The most important factor among these is nacre thickness. Pearls with thicker nacre will last more than those with thinner nacre therefore nacre thickness determines the lifespan of a pearl. Another important factor in determining the quality of the pearl is the luster. Shinier pearls will be considered of greater quality than the rest.

Another type of pearls is Akoya Pearl. Akoya are saltwater pearls and are considered quite valuable. The demand of these has been growing over the past decades and these are heavily being used in different forms of jewelry. These pearls have their origin in Japan however in the recent years, China is also producing them and the yield from China is increasing with the passage of time. New techniques are being developed which have helped in increasing the yield and production of these pearls. They are normally available in white and cream color with a little overtone. These pearls are especially famous for their round shape and excellent luster.

Pearls are famous all over the world for their unique qualities. These gem stones like in other parts of the world are also famous among the citizens of Dubai. The demand of pearls is quite high in the city of Dubai and many Dubai pearls shops are situated in almost every shopping malls and souks. These shops offer a wide range of pearls at good prices.
