Plastic Surgery A Rising Trend Among Men
When we think about plastic surgery, we think about women. Particularly bored, older housewives who want to compete with the ever sprouting youthful bunch with wrinkle-free skin, luscious lips, full bosom, and voluptuous behinds. But did you know that men are getting just as insecure of the younger bucks at the office or the dapper dude getting more girls at the bar?
Sure men hit the gym, switch to a healthy diet or get the necessary haircut or dye job, but there are limits to what these can achieve and often times men, like women, feel they need the occasional boost to keep up with the competition.
Some men are fresh out of a break-up or divorce, and want to get ahead in the dating game. Others are simply inspired by their wives or girlfriends who have just been under the knife and motivated to be as equally new and improved as their female counterparts.
Between the years 2000 and 2005, there has been an astounding 44% rise in invasive cosmetic procedures among males. While men are no strangers to plastic surgery, this depicts an increase in men’s desires to look more attractive.
It has also been noted that men prefer procedures that have little to no scaring or a shorter recovery period. This has resulted in the increasing popularity of quickie treatments like Botox, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.
The acceptance of these procedures as mainstream in society has been proven in the increase of Botox treatments among males from 2000 to 2005. Over the years, plastic surgeons have mastered the craft, making patients’ transformations look more natural as compared to results during earlier years. This is very beneficial because men in particular don’t like being queried about whether they had something done and would prefer people to believe that all the good looks and so-called graceful aging can be attributed to a healthy lifestyle and genetics.
Aside from these out-patient procedures, more invasive procedures such as rhinoplasty, liposuction and hair transplant have also become increasingly popular among men. Liposuction among males or the typical “spare-tire” removal has increased by 10% between 2004 and 2005.
Plastic surgeons predict that since gastric bypasses have become more commonly performed, especially with the rise in obesity, tummy tucks and body lifts will become trendy in the next few years. Patients would of course want unsightly folds of loose skin to be removed.
Although women still provide the greater contribution in the rise of the plastic surgery industry, it is safe to say that men have definitely caught the cosmetic surgery bug.
